Black Student Summer Leadership Program 2024

The Black Student Summer Leadership Program is now accepting applications for the 2024 cohort. Students hired will explore a range of academic, career and wellness activities and participate in Youth Participatory Action Research. 2nd Annual Toronto Raptors Essay Contest

Inspired by the legacy of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander. This year the Toronto Raptors in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement are challenging Grade 8 students to write a 500-word essay on Canadian Black hero, the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine for a chance to win a home game experience at Scotiabank Arena for their whole class!

The essay should include:

• A brief background on the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine,

• A description of how Dr. Jean Augustine has impacted the student’s life and,

• The impact of Dr. Jean Augustine on the lives of Canadians across the country.

Grade 8 teachers can register and attend the TDSB teacher information session on Monday, January 29, 2024.

Each class can submit one essay for class prize consideration:

• 1st place: A home game experience at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday, April 7, 2024.

• 2nd & 3rd Place: Classes win an in-class Raptors experience with lunch & Raptors swag.

Black Student Leadership Program CPC301- Black Studies Course Politics in Action Making Change

This course will critically examine Blackness within the Canadian context. Students enrolled in this course will learn about the historical and present-day experiences of Black-Canadian changemakers who have, and are currently, transforming the socio-political and socio-economic landscape at the local and national level. Throughout this course, students are encouraged to build a positive racial identity while they practice critical self-reflection. Students will leave this course with a strong understanding of how best they can impart and impact change in their communities locally as well as globally.

ABC’s of Literacy Workshop

The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement in collaboration with Equity, Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression, and Teacher’s Learning and Leading invites Black parents, caregivers and families raising Black children to the ABC’s of Literacy Workshop. This virtual workshop will provide an overview of the revised Ontario Language Curriculum, Grades 1-8. In addition, key strategies, practical resources and tools will be shared by educators to support Black children in both school and at home.

I Am Big with Itah Sadu

Join us on February 2 as we launch into Black History Month by exploring the rich histories of untold stories which celebrate African Canadians. In this virtual storytelling session, the esteemed Itah Sadu will read her newest book, I Am Big, which explores the experiences of a young Black hockey player as he finds joy and confidence in his talent on the ice. Stick around as Itah weaves in stories of Black Canadians connected to this magical sport!

Pathways to Public Relations

The Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement in collaboration with Humber College Faculty of Media, Mediabrands and Proof Strategies invites Black students in Grades 11 and 12 who are interested in public relations and communications to register for the Pathways to Public Relations program.

This program explores pathways in the public relations and communications industry (e.g., media relations, social and digital media, public affairs, event management, content creation, etc.) and areas that are not often explored in traditional education settings.

Students participating in this program will learn:

About public relations and media relations;
How to get into PR (pros/cons degree vs. diploma, various programs);
What is media;
How to get a scholarship.

Leonard Braithwaite Africentric Program

Are you interested in applying for the Leonard Braithwaite Africentric Program for the 2024-2025 School year? Winston Churchill CI cordially invites students, parents, guardians, and caregivers to our Leonard Braithwaite Program Information Session on Thursday, January 18 at 6 PM in the library. Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please register for the session.

The Leonard Braithwaite Africentric Program is Canada’s first Africentric Program offered at the secondary level. The program offers students the chance to learn the provincial curriculum through the diverse perspectives, experiences and histories of people from the African Diaspora. The curriculum with an Africentric Framework aims to empower students by centering them within the context of familiar cultural and social references from their own historical settings.

The deadline to submit completed applications is January 26, 2024.
