A very sOLE Halloween
We celebrated the Halloween spirit a little early this year. Student Council organized a door decorating contest, with a tie between Caitlin’s Gender Studies class and Rachel’s Photography class. Many of our students dressed up in fabulously creative costumes. And, of course, there was plenty of candy to go around.
We wish you all a safe and happy Halloween weekend!

SOLE Students win photography contest
Congratulations to Zander and Amelia, who won One Book One Aurora’s photography contest, Art In Unexpected Places. The contest, inspired by Drew Hayden Taylor’s Chasing Painted Horses, invited photographers to capture graffiti, yarn bombing, and public art of all kinds. Our talented students placed first and second in the youth category and made us proud!

SOLE Craftivism
Students in Rachel’s Crafting and the World of Design class recently participated in the Stitches For Survival project, a worldwide knitting, crocheting, and sewing project intended to raise awareness about climate change at the UN’s COP26 conference in Glasgow.
SOLE created and sent two panels that will be joined with the work of hundreds of other crafters. The final scarf will be 1.5 miles in length, symbolizing the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius. Afterwards, the work will be recycled into other projects, such as art installations and blankets for unhoused people and refugees.
Though it’s still being sewn together, the scarf is already beginning to gather media attention, including by the BBC, where the organizers gave a shoutout to the Canadian contribution. Keep a lookout for our pieces when the final creation is assembled and displayed in November!
